A symphony of Schubert
Eventually disintegrates
To background music
For great ponderances
Such as
“How did that woman get here?
I wonder if she came to the Charleston Symphony
On purpose….
With full intention of being a concertmaster
In a small pond.”
She is a lovely dark haired koi
Whose eyes sparkle as
The conductor shakes her hand.
The conductor - who appears
to have a very precise cut
allowing his hair to move
as he directs, and
carefully curling
around the edge of his collar.
He is casually exquisite in white tie
A hint of an accent as he speaks to us.
I ponder also the decision of a man
To play the double bass
He’s easily six and a half feet tall
Remarkably, curiously slender man
Did he think that was his only choice?
Folding up his legs
Perching on a folding chair
With a violin dwarfed by his hands…
No. That obviously wouldn’t work.
He has chosen his profession well.
Profession. These are professional musicians.
But playing for the Charleston Symphony
Cannot be their only occupation.
I know too much of the
Financial woes of my beloved city,
It cannot be. We do well to pay Grant Cooper.
How do the ladies choose what to wear?
How many outfits do they have
Dedicated to the all-black wardrobe of the symphony?
These are the burning questions
That form as Schubert drags on.
