I had a VERY different experience with The Captain, only having seen a few episodes, and not watching it at all when for my 5th birthday I got a personalized "Happy Birthday" Captain Kangaroo record. So here was this man I never watched calling me "John" through the record player as though he knew me, and all these kids I never met singing songs to me, and it creeped me out and pissed me off. I silently resented my parents for giving me this abomination and never played it. Over time I forgave The Captain but never became a fan.
