I bet church in the Captain Kangaroo religion is interesting, with Dancing Bear leading the singing, and Mr. Green Jeans passing the collection plate...

I had a VERY different experience with The Captain, only having seen a few episodes, and not watching it at all when for my 5th birthday I got a personalized "Happy Birthday" Captain Kangaroo record. So here was this man I never watched calling me "John" through the record player as though he knew me, and all these kids I never met singing songs to me, and it creeped me out and pissed me off. I silently resented my parents for giving me this abomination and never played it. Over time I forgave The Captain but never became a fan.

My friend spike21 still remembers being freaked when The Captain asked for the usual audience participation in one of the shows rituals. Keeshan had asked " Boys and girls, are you going to help me wake Grandfather Clock? "; her then reply, at about age 5, was a sullen, flippant " No! ". To which the Captain stared quizzically but concernedly directly into the camera and gasped " 'No'? "...

My friend say this is still one of the top ten out-of-the-blue jolts of her life.
