No wonder I hated watching Sesame Street with Scarlett.  Elmo always made me wanna puke, but I thought it was just because I was grown up. Now I know the truth - I was jaded and hardened by my years on the Street.  The ORIGINAL Street.

Caution - this article discusses the original Sesame Street episodes, which are deemed unfit for today's toddlers.

Pablum, anyone?

I just read that article. When did America become so pussified? Seriously? Cookie Monster can't gorge on cookies anymore? Showing an innocent scenario of a grown up helping a child is wrong? Are we that afraid of every person that we can't show kids what its like to be innocent? Oh no, Oscar the grouch is *gasp* grouchy....we can't show that negativity. Fuck off, seriously. They did nothing to me. I never once thought twice about what I saw when I was a kid. It was innocent....and fun. Parents just need to be fucking parents again. /rant

I LOVE that whole "can't show him smoking" business - HELL! HE ATE HIS FUCKING PIPE! If a child can't tell that's funny and fake, then he needs to crawl back in the womb for another month.

Jim Henson never dreamed up anything a child can't watch. Even The Dark Chrystal.

Jim Henson is flippin in his fuckin grave right now! This has got to be the most ridiculous article I ever read!! I grew up on "old time" Sesame Street and if I ever have children I would never have a problem showing the dvds of the old shows to them. Todays parents need to grow up and realize not everything is to be taken so damn seriously!!!

This Carol-Lynn Parente needs to be tied up and forced to watch as kids are given a six-hour screening of The Three Stooges! That'd burn out her temporal lobe. And throw in some un-censored classic Johnny Quest for good measure.

I am thinking of ordering the dvds JUST so Scarlett can see them. And maybe pass them on to some other small children I know.

I agree with the outing of Snuffleupagus, though; it had been 'til then sending (I feel) a mixed message. I mean, we've all of us experienced the heartbreak of not being believed after trying to live by The Truth Shall Set You Free (don't think Washington really didn't get his buns warmed after 'fessing to the cherry tree?) but being punished instead, or whatever?

I mean, trying to convince folks about the existance of something only you have seen or heard, just to be condemned, what a load; Big Bird of Ark, anyone?

I agree wholeheartedly with the Snuffy issue. I can remember being frustrated TO. NO. END. by the whole "we can see him, but they can't" business. I also remember being quite glad and relieved by the news in 1986 that Snuffy had been sighted - looooong after I'd stopped watching the show.

No no no, gotta get this right;

Big Bird and Joan of Ark are sitting in a bar across from God and Snuffleupagus, bitching that nobody believes them; Harvey walks up and says "What is this, a joke?"

- that's better; feel free to spread.

Yeah, this is why our generation looks at the Gen Y parents and fights the urge to slap them silly. I mean, this level of coddling is just idiotic. This is what causes little girls to get suspended for giving a couple friends a hug.

or suspended for drugs for sharing some Midol which the school nurse can no longer dispense due to liability issues.

I've heard that Halls have resulted in suspension in some schools. Don't know how true it is but it was presented as a legitimate news story.

It really is sad where the country has gone in the last 30 years. I don't care if kids might die from head trauma, you need to play in abandoned lots and fall off bikes and get a skinned elbow. I see kids wearing bicycle helmets now and think of them as targets. I see their parents showing them they can do it too and want to help them test the effectiveness. if this is the future, I don't want to live this long. Sure glad it makes more room on the airwaves for reality tv... Fuckin' A! (..is for assholes, that's good enough for me)

But do you remember the uproar that certain factions had about Sesame Street (well, maybe you don't; this might have been when you-all were toddlers) - the right-wing nutso faction hated that Spanish was being taught; that the cast was multi-cultural; that children talked to puppets instead of to God... Sesame Street was very radical in its time.

But you're right: the old Sesame Street was MUCH better than the sanitized version. It's still better than most of the other children's programming, though.

From: [identity profile] sapphirescarlet.livejournal.com
I really DON'T remember that. But I LOVED the fact that I got some Spanish that way. I've always had an ear for languages even if I don't speak them, and I have a fantastic accent when I speak what little I know. (Not to brag, just that I've had a lot of Spanish-speaking people tell me so when I worked at the phone company.)

Hearing it so early on Sesame Street could very well be the reason.
