Given that we're having enough trouble keeping "current" animals from going extinct, trying to bring back those gone for thousands of years seems incredibly wasteful and stupid.

Of course, often Science is about what can be done, not what should. Sometimes that brings great results. Sometimes it makes you go WTF?!
